Possession without purpose is like a cup of Spumoni without a spoon. Italian ice cream should never go to waste and neither should an offensive possession. At the moment there isn’t much in the way of tactical awareness here in the States. Keepers often heave the ball Hail Mary style and kick-ins are randomly blasted or flicked forward. Futsal’s sister sport, basketball, should provide a bit of blueprint. Nearly every organized youth basketball team includes set plays, off-the-ball movement, and proper spacing. Things will soon be no different in futsal as coaching education increases. In the following short video, you’ll observe a 05/06 group that has trained since they were 6-year-olds. Their success at attacking possession is the exception at the moment, however, in the years to come it should be common place. Get your spoons ready.
